Music For 6 Guitars

In the usually quiet Rose Main Reading Room in New York’s public library, Ben Frost took command of his console and crafted along with Tim Hecker, Shahzad Ismaily, Paul Corley, Sarah Lipstate, Sarah Register, Daniel Rejmer and a brass sextet waves of electronic noise that were sky high.

A sign, just outside the main reading room, read: Making unreasonable noise is not allowed at The New York Public Library!

a Winged Victory For The Sullen

a winged victory for the sullen is the brain child of Dustin O’Halloran & Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie, both are front runners in the contemporary music scene.

Ben Shirley and the Scrimshaw Ensemble at The Uncertainty Music Series

July’s uncertainty music series featured Ben Shilrley(guitar) and the Scrimshaw Ensemble:
Nathan Bontrager on cello,
Adam Matlock on accordion,
Anne Rhodes voice,
& Carl Testa on bass.

The group performed a set of Ben’s original music followed by improvisational sets for duets. The group concluded the night by a piece for quintet written by Ben.

The Uncertainty music series is a regular event that takes place in Never Ending Books store on State Street in New Haven, CT.

The Big Bang On A Can

Even though scientists can’t agree on the exact date or the details of what happened on the original big bang, we know one fact:

A big bang has been observed every year in New York City since 1987 where a marathon of continuous musical performances takes place and attracts musicians, composers & music lovers from all over the world.

According to Bang On A Can’s website, the marathon , just like the big bang, is “a collision of musical styles and ideas”.

From Berlin To Brooklyn: Nils Frahm & Greg Haines in NY

Last Sunday marked the last day in the US tour for Berlin Pianist & composer Nils Frahm. Dumbo, Brooklyn was his last stop where he played a set of his solo piano works accompanied by Greg Haines, the English composer, in Galapagos art space.

This was the first US tour for the two composers after appearing in numerous performances across  Europe. Frahm’s music is minimalist, emotional and evocative while Haines’ is a blend of modern classical and ambient.

The evening started with New York based composer Kyle Bobby Dunn playing a set of his solo guitar ambient work accompanied by visual artworks.

Next, Nils Frahm took the stage and started his performance with his breathtaking piece: Said & Done. Towards the end, he was joined by Greg Haines on the piano:

Out Of Thin Air Performs at The Ivory

Out Of Thin Air, the band, performed a lengthy and lively set a couple of weeks ago in the little town of Deep River, CT. Their music included song covers from all sorts of genres.
